About This Airline

LATAM Airlines is the leading airline in South America, offering an extensive network that connects Australia to multiple destinations across the South American continent. Flying out of both Sydney & Melbourne and partnering with Qantas, LATAM provides seamless connections from Australia to South America and provides excellent service, making it a fantastic choice for travellers heading to South America.

LATAM operates Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft across the Pacific, ensuring a comfortable journey. With competitive fares and great multi-city options, you can explore multiple destinations in South America with ease.

LATAM Business Class

A Latin American-inspired cabin, prioritising rest and privacy on your flight. LATAM offers a premium Business Class experience with spacious lie-flat seats, direct aisle access on most long-haul flights, and exceptional onboard service.

  • Fully reclining seats at 180 degrees, with access to quick-charge USB ports and a universal 110-volt outlet.
  • LATAM’s seating configuration on their Boeing 787-900 is either 1-2-1 or 2-2-2, depending on which product the aircraft is fitted with.
  • Special menu options – Request a special meal on international flights lasting more than 3.5 hours while enjoying a selection of South American wines.
  • Up to 18-inch touchscreens, noise-cancelling headphones and individual handsets.
  • Gourmet South American-inspired cuisine, and fine wines from the region.
  • The LATAM Signature Lounges, including the flagship lounge in Santiago, provide a relaxing space to unwind before your flight, featuring shower suites, premium dining, and comfortable seating areas.
  • Within South America, LATAM markets the front of the plane as Premium Economy instead of Business Class on their narrow body aircraft. These cabins provide a similar level of inclusions (similar to most European Business Class), extra luggage, priority check-in, lounge access (where available) and a separate cabin. On regional routes that they service with wide body aircraft with flat beds, they market the front of the plane as Business Class.

LATAM’s Frequent Flyer Program – LATAM Pass

LATAM left the Oneworld group in 2020 but still partners with Qantas, as well as Delta, Qatar, Alaska, Finnair, British Airways, Lufthansa, Swiss Airlines, and many more. Their frequent flyer program is LATAM Pass, and they sometimes have offers for status matches throughout the year. More information on this can be found here – Click Here

Stopover Cities & Routing Options

LATAM’s extensive network allows stopovers in key cities across South America and the South Pacific before continuing to your final destination. LATAM now offers direct services from Sydney and Melbourne to Santiago, as well as continuing to offer the Sydney–Auckland–Santiago service.

For travellers from Queensland, you can fly Brisbane to Auckland (using Qantas) and connect onto the LATAM Auckland–Santiago flight from there, avoiding the need to travel through Sydney or Melbourne to start your journey, though this is also possible.

Starting Points in Australia: As LATAM partners with Qantas, seamless connections can be offered from all capital cities in Australia, as well as many major cities such as Cairns, Gold Coast, Ayers Rock, etc.

  • South Pacific: Auckland
  • South America: Santiago, Lima, São Paulo, Bogotá, Quito & Buenos Aires
  • Destinations: LATAM flies to multiple destinations within Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru & Uruguay.
  • North America: Offering direct flights from their South American hubs to Los Angeles, Miami, Mexico City, Atlanta, Cuba, Aruba, Jamaica, Costa Rica & many more.
  • Europe: Offering direct flights from their South American hubs to London, Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Frankfurt & many more destinations using their European interline partners.

Airfare Pricing and Baggage Options

South America is one of the destinations from Australia that has very large seasonal swings in pricing. Airfares to southern South America can easily be double or triple in price during the Australian summer months compared to the rest of the year.

  • Book Early: With only two airlines offering direct connectivity between Australia and South America, flights fill up fast during peak periods.
  • Advance Purchase: The special sale fares in Business Class typically have a minimum 60-day advance purchase requirement. Book at least 60 days in advance, as all fare examples below would be drastically more expensive if booked within two months of travel.
  • Flexible Dates: South America can often have high season prices and super high season prices. Instead of travelling on 18th December, if you can leave one week earlier or one week later, prices at the front of the plane can be dramatically different. Flexibility in travel is your wallet’s friend.
  • Baggage and Refunds: LATAM’s standard economy class fares do not include any checked luggage. Additionally, in business class, standard fares may only include one piece of checked luggage and may be non-refundable. Ask an Airfare Geeks consultant to upgrade your fare type in both economy and business class to include luggage and some flexibility at the time of ticketing—it is much cheaper to add it to your ticket in advance rather than at the airport.
