We had to re-learn how to socialise after two years of lockdowns and working from home – we also need a refresher on how to travel. Let’s face it: it’s been a while since we were last on a long-haul flight or had to go through airport security. With international travel on hold for the past two years, and our lives revolving around binge-watching the latest Netflix series, it’s hardly surprising that we are not ‘match-fit’ for travel.
Here’s a refresher on travel dos and don’ts that will help you dodge chaos and have you sailing through airport queues.
Channel Your Inner A-type
- Triple-check COVID-related entry requirements and don’t leave mandatory pre-testing or health declarations to the last minute.
- Allow more time than you think you’ll need to check in your bags and get through security. The recommendation for international flights is to arrive at the airport 3 hours before departure.
- Have digital and hard copies of your travel documentation, identification, and vaccination certificates at the ready.
- Check baggage allowances and pre-weigh your bags before heading to the airport. The last thing you need is to be surprised by a hefty fee at the check-in counter.
Save Time and Unnecessary Drama Going Through Security
- Remember to abide by carry-on luggage regulations (i.e., liquids totalling 100 millilitres or less to be contained in travel containers inside a transparent zip-lock bag).
- Don’t wait to be told to remove your belt, electronic devices, and coins.
- Stack your tray after going through security.
- Minimise unnecessary accessories (particularly metallic jewellery).
- Always follow staff instructions and be cooperative if selected for random testing.
In the Departure Lounge
- Never leave your bags unattended.
- Don’t take up multiple seats.
- Have your boarding ticket and passport on hand.
Set Yourself Up for a Comfortable Flight
- Dress appropriately in plane-friendly layered clothing that will keep you toasty in the air and allow for a seamless transition to the climate of your destination.
- It’s never a good idea to consume too much alcohol on board.
- Invest in a pair of noise-cancelling headphones to enjoy your choice of entertainment in peace and without disturbing those around you.
- Remember to practice basic hygiene while on the plane, such as refreshing your breath by brushing your teeth and using a fragrance-free deodorant.
- Standing in the aisle the moment the plane lands will not get you to your destination any faster nor endear you to your fellow passengers!
- While mask-wearing is no longer compulsory on some airlines, we always recommend carrying masks and sanitisers.
- Maintain a safe distance from other people where possible (1.5m).
- Never travel if you are feeling unwell or experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.
Above all else, be kind and empathetic to your fellow travellers (including the mum trying to manage a toddler meltdown as best she can) and airport/airline staff. A smile and a ‘thank you’ go a long way.
