VietJet joins the Line-Up at Western Sydney International Airport
Western Sydney International Airport continues to build its international network, with Vietnamese low-cost carrier VietJet becoming the latest airline to announce flights from Sydney’s newest airport.
From January 2027, VietJet will launch direct services between Western Sydney and Ho Chi Minh City, initially operating two return flights each week. Flights will be operated by Airbus A330 aircraft configured with 330 seats.
The airline plans to increase the route to three weekly return services from March 2027, giving travellers in Western Sydney another convenient option for reaching Vietnam and connecting onwards throughout Asia.
WSI is scheduled to welcome its first passenger flights on 25 October 2026, offering 24-hour operations and a new gateway for travellers across Western Sydney and beyond.
With Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines and now VietJet committing to international services, the airport’s global network is beginning to take shape – and further airline and route announcements are likely to follow as the opening approaches.
Melbourne Airport Unveils $4.5 Billion International Terminal Expansion
Melbourne Airport has revealed plans for a major transformation of its international terminal, with a $4.5 billion expansion forming a key part of its newly released draft 2027 Master Plan.
The ambitious 20-year strategy is designed to prepare Melbourne Airport for significant growth in passenger numbers, with the airport anticipating that traffic could almost double over the coming decades.
At the centre of the plan is a major expansion of Melbourne Airport’s international terminal, designed to increase capacity and improve the passenger experience as demand for international travel continues to grow.
The proposed development will create additional space for international operations, helping the airport accommodate more passengers, aircraft and potentially new airline services and destinations.
The investment forms part of a broader long-term vision for Melbourne Airport as it prepares for continued growth in both domestic and international aviation.
Qantas Project Sunrise: Sydney-New York set to follow London in late 2027
Qantas is preparing to reshape long-haul travel, with its highly anticipated Project Sunrise flights from Sydney to London and New York set to take off in 2027.
The airline will launch nonstop Sydney-London flights in October 2027, with the journey expected to take around 21 hours aboard its specially configured Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft. Sydney-New York is expected to follow just a few months later, potentially before the end of 2027.
Designed specifically for ultra-long-haul flying, the Project Sunrise aircraft will feature just 238 seats and a dedicated Wellbeing Zone between Premium Economy and Economy, available to all passengers. On Sydney-London services, passengers can expect an extended period of darkness during the flight to encourage sleep and help travellers adjust to their destination time zone.
And adjusting to the time difference will certainly be part of the experience. Passengers will cross around nine to 11 time zones en route to London, while those travelling to New York could cross an incredible 14 to 16 time zones, depending on the time of year.
The groundbreaking routes form part of Qantas’ ambitious Project Sunrise program, which aims to connect Australia’s east coast directly with some of the world’s biggest cities – eliminating the traditional stopover and taking nonstop international travel to a whole new level.
