Skynest™: Economy just levelled up

Long-haul Economy travel is set for a notable upgrade, with Air New Zealand confirming the introduction of its Economy Skynest™ sleep pods on flights between Auckland and New York from November 2026.

Available to both Economy and Premium Economy passengers, the new offering will allow travellers to book a dedicated rest space during the flight – with reservations opening from May 18 onwards.

On a route that can stretch up to 17 hours, Economy Skynest™ is designed to give passengers the option to step away from their seat and enjoy a more comfortable break mid-journey.

For many travellers, particularly those connecting from Australia via Auckland, it presents a practical way to break up one of the world’s longest flights and arrive feeling more refreshed.

What passengers can expect

The Economy Skynest™ zone will be located within the Economy cabin and will feature six bunk-style pods, available on a shared, bookable basis.

Each pod has been designed with comfort in mind, offering a full-length mattress, bedding, ambient lighting, ventilation and charging ports. Passengers will also be provided with an amenity kit including an eye mask, socks, ear plugs, skincare products and a dental kit – helping to make the experience as restful and practical as possible.

In terms of dimensions, the pods measure approximately 203cm in length, with a width of around 64cm at the shoulders, tapering to 41cm at the feet.

With only six pods available onboard – shared across 172 Economy and Premium Economy passengers – availability will be limited, and demand is expected to be strong. Initially, each flight will offer two sleep sessions, meaning forward planning will be key for those looking to secure a spot.

Pricing will start from $495 for a four-hour session.

Designed for Ultra Long-Haul Travel

The Auckland–New York service is one of the longest commercial routes in the world, operating up to 17 hours on the return sector. For passengers, the ability to properly rest – even for a few hours – can significantly improve the overall travel experience.

For Australian travellers, Economy Skynest™ will be accessible via connections through Auckland, offering an additional level of flexibility when planning trans-Pacific journeys.

A Broader Shift in Economy Comfort

The introduction of Economy Skynest™ reflects a wider shift across the aviation industry, with airlines placing greater focus on improving comfort in Economy – particularly on long-haul routes.

Air New Zealand has long been at the forefront of this trend, having introduced the Skycouch in 2010 – a feature that allows a row of Economy seats to convert into a flat surface for resting.

More recently, United Airlines announced its upcoming “Relax Row” concept, expected to launch from 2027. Similar in intent, the product will allow passengers to book an entire row of seats designed for stretching out and resting, with plans for rollout across a large portion of its long-haul fleet.

Together, these developments highlight a growing demand for more flexible, comfort-focused options in Economy – bridging the gap between traditional seating and premium cabin experiences.

Ongoing Cabin Upgrades

Alongside Economy Skynest™, Air New Zealand has also introduced updated cabins across its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner fleet.

This includes refreshed Premium Economy seating featuring a fixed-shell design, allowing passengers to recline without encroaching on the space of the traveller behind – a small but meaningful improvement for overall comfort.

These enhancements form part of the airline’s broader strategy to elevate the onboard experience across all cabins, particularly on ultra long-haul routes.

Skynest will officially launch on Auckland–New York services from November 2026, offering passengers a new way to rest and recharge during one of the longest journeys in commercial aviation.
