United Airlines introduces ‘Relax Row’ Economy seats

Long-haul Economy flights could soon become much more comfortable, with United Airlines unveiling Relax Row – giving Economy passengers the ability to stretch out and lie down on international flights.

The airline plans to begin rolling out the new seats from 2027, with installations expected on more than 200 Boeing 787 and Boeing 777 aircraft by 2030.

Here’s what travellers can expect from this new way to fly Economy…

What is the United Relax Row?

The United Relax Row is a dedicated row of three Economy seats designed to convert into a flat couch-like surface. Adjustable leg rests fold up to create a larger sleeping or lounging space, allowing passengers to lie down across the seats rather than trying to sleep upright.

Passengers booking a Relax Row will also receive additional amenities, including:

• Mattress pad
• Specially sized blanket
• Extra pillows
• Travel kits
• Plush toy and children’s kit for families

Relax Row sections will be located between United Economy and Premium Plus, effectively creating a new mid-tier comfort option.

Not the first – but a first for North America

While United Airlines is the first airline in North America to introduce this type of seating, similar concepts already exist internationally.

Airlines that already offer couch-style Economy seating include:

• Air New Zealand – Skycouch
• All Nippon Airways – ANA Couchii
• Lufthansa – Sleeper Row

These products have become popular with families and travellers wanting more comfort without paying for Premium Economy or Business Class.

How much will it cost?

United has not yet announced official pricing, but industry experts expect Relax Row to work similarly to other airlines’ couch products – meaning passengers will likely pay an additional fee to reserve the row, rather than buying three full seats.

This usually ends up costing significantly less than Premium Economy, while offering the ability to lie down on long flights.

Why this matters for travellers

For long-haul routes such as Australia to the USA, USA to Europe, USA to Asia and other trans-Pacific flights, Relax Row seating could become an attractive and more affordable alternative to Business Class.

Travellers benefit from extra space, improved comfort and a better chance of getting some sleep, without paying premium cabin prices. It may also be particularly appealing for families travelling together.
