Cool Down This Christmas and Check Out These 9 International Snow Caps

At Airfare Geeks, we’re big fans of shredding snow and tearing up a slope over the Christmas break. When you’re on a round the world trip, of course, you’re going to want to pack everything into your schedule, so why not carve out some time, see some snow, and go on an adventure?

When you consider planning your international travel, it can often be overwhelming to whittle down your options and craft the ideal itinerary. Airfare Geeks have all the expertise needed to put together the perfect escape in line with your dream RTW trip. If you don’t know where to start – because you just want to get your skis ready – we have put together some of our favourite snowcaps that you can add to your round the world trip for this Christmas break.

Swiss Alps

Swiss Alps

Swiss Alps

First up on the list is the picturesque Swiss Alps. Skiing or not, how could you go wrong? Zermatt is one of the most popular places in the Swiss Alps to ski or snowboard. The terrain varies in altitude between 2,500 and 3,900 metres, and the area is home to long ski runs, perfect for skiers or snowboarders of any age and ability. Heading here during the Christmas break is a great time to visit as it’s a quieter time of the year for tourism. You’ll have much more space to shred the mountain slopes, and, of course, accommodation options are more flexible.

Ruka, Finland

The ski season in Ruka, Finland, runs from October until the end of May, giving you more flexibility in choosing to go over the Christmas break. Ruka ski resort is one of Finland’s most popular destinations, with 35 different slopes and 22 lifts.

If you’re going to make a stop in Finland, why not treat yourself and fly in business class for $8813? Start in Australia, stop in Bangkok, then to Helsinki – travelling from there to your epic skiing adventure. Continue on to Stockholm and NYC before returning home.

Yosemite, California

When you think of California, the sun usually comes to mind, with palm trees swaying in the wind. Not at Christmas time in Yosemite. Badger Pass is a great place to ski and snowboard with a huge 10 kilometres worth of slopes. Besides riding the slopes, Yosemite has so much more to offer: you can backpack around the area, take scenic hikes and even skate at the Curry Village ice rink, which is perfect for the kids!

Tromso, Norway

Home of the Northern lights, Norway is a great country worth visiting. Whilst Tromso isn’t home to the craziest mountains for skiing, it definitely has slopes that are worth tackling. Its runs are also great for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. You might even see the Northern lights when you’re out on the slopes if you’re lucky. Tromso is also a beautiful place to get your nature hit and a great spot for whale watching and dog sledding.

Whistler and Banff, Canada

Canada is often viewed as the ultimate destination for a winter wonderland. We’ve included both Whistler and Banff because both are great options to visit over the Christmas break. The difference between the two is that Banff is a town, whereas Whistler is a resort.

Whistler is great for families, and its snow school is world-class, teaching children as young as three years old. If you’re looking for something on the opposite end of the spectrum, Whistler also offers heli-skiing – a sport that is for the ultimate daredevils. Whilst it is costly, you’ll have access to more than 400,000 acres of terrain. Either way, you won’t make a wrong choice adding one of these to your RTW trip.

Turkey

It now has a gondola and 15 ski lifts; Turkey is a gateway to many other beautiful countries, and the markets are amazing.
